Personal Web Page as Social Necessity

The Wall Street Journal Home Page

Plenty of people have personal Web pages. But are we reaching the point where you need one?

The answer is still "no" -- but that "no" is no longer quite so firm as it used to be. And sometimes that hesitation is a sign that the wheels of social change are starting to turn -- that "no" will turn into "maybe" and then from there move quickly to "yes" and then finally to "it's weird that you don't." If you're a thirtysomething, you've seen answering machines, voice mail, email addresses and cellphones complete the journey from curiosities to perceived necessities, just as our elders saw the same thing happen with TVs and phones.

A new generation of social networking sites is gaining support in Silicon Valley, challenging the established models of leaders MySpace and Facebook.

FriendFeed, a service founded by the creators of Google Maps and Gmail, is at the head of an anarchic counter movement of “lifestreaming”, where users themselves aggregate and order their online social activities from multiple sources.

Finding cracks in Facebook - May. 13, 2008

following_facebook.jpg

Since September 2006, when Zuckerberg opened Facebook to nonstudents, the site has grown 12-fold, making it one of the fastest-rising dot-coms in history. Visitors tripled after Facebook expanded internationally last year, and they continue to spend more time on the site: 20 billion total minutes in March 2008, vs. 6.4 billion a year prior. But the number of U.S. visitors has leveled off, fluctuating between 30 million and 35 million, according to comScore. And that's not all. Anecdotal evidence suggests that many of the adults who signed on last summer to see what the fuss was about are done with their social-networking experiment.

MediaPost Publications - P&G Unit Chief Lights The Way To Entertained Consumers - 04/18/2008

PG products"The danger zone no marketer should inhabit is brands or products that are highly amplified but not advocated: never use the term 'buzz marketing.' Buzz marketing is the danger zone." He says the Office Max Elf buzz campaign--in which consumers create and email to friends, animated dancing elves of themselves during the holidays last year--is an example of sound and fury signifying nothing. "Some 123 million people 'elfed' themselves," he says. "It got incredible viral amplification. But same-store sales declined 7.5%. Don't go for the head fake."

It’s Official: U.S. Social Networking Sites See Slow Down « Creative Capital

Crisis or temporary lull? The writer fails to acknowledge the growth of professional social sites like LinkedIn. Also missing is the growth of social media embedded into nearly ALL online "experiences." Obviously, I tilt toward seeing social media as a permanent fixture of the convergence, not a passing fad a la Second Life.

The total audience of U.S. social networks seems to be stuck at a low-to-mid-single digit growth rate, while the engagment metrics are falling for just about everyone. Time spent on Bebo.com has been sliced in half over the last four months, while Friendster’s time spent has plummeted nearly 75% in the same time period.

From MySpace to YourSpace - New York Times

Finally, we can point to the Web and say it's a mass medium. It's a reach medium. It's a frequency medium. It is a heavy medium.

The world’s largest social networking site, MySpace has grown far past being merely “a place for friends,” as its slogan states. With an estimated 110 million monthly active users, MySpace is undeniably a powerful tool for advertisers who seek reach and efficiency.
